Our History
New Horizons has been assisting victims of domestic violence in Middlesex County for 40 years. New Horizons operates a 24/7 emergency shelter for victims and their families as part of a comprehensive approach to helping over 1,000 women, children, and men every year. We also provide community education, support groups and individual counseling, court advocacy, a confidential hotline service, and consultation to Community Health Center, Inc.’s clinical provider teams. New Horizon is part of the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence where they advocate for ongoing advancement of legislation and policy that protect the health and interests of women.
New Horizons is a program of the Community Health Center, Inc. (CHC). The relationship began when victim’s partner found the original safe house and lit it on fire. No one was injured, but the structure burnt to the ground, leaving victims of abuse with no place to go in times of emergency. CHC stepped in to keep the shelter running. With the support of Middlesex Hospital, Middletown Police Department, CT Valley Hospital, and Senator Christopher Dodd, the Community Health Center, Inc. wrote a grant and raised funds to have the ability to provide a safe and healthy environment for victims of domestic violence.
